	Mind Mapping in action:

	How New York got back on its feet after 9/11 : The Con Edison case After 9/11 and the collapse of the World Trade Center, all the vital utilities to large areas of the city were thrown into chaos. The communication lines, gas, electricity, water and sewerage networks were in disarray. This hemorrhaging of the utilities presented a genuine threat to businesses and residents alike. Con Edison, the supplier of gas and electricity to the residents of New York, faced the massive challenge of restoring power to the residents of Manhattan. However, the company had experience with one crucial tool - Mind Maps. Con Edison hosted teams from all regions of public utility to develop a complex action plan to route their way through the crisis. A mega Mind-Map was drawn up, on which all the problems and necessary solutions were laid out. Each step was prioritized and sequenced, and the impact of the failure of one utility on another examined, and this formed the basis of an operations guide. Con Edison created a Mind Map in conjunction with a large-screen monitor to provide live-time data displays. The Mind Map included web-links to all key documents. Your Values. What do you stand for? How do you want people to behave?

Fewer than 10% of organizations around the world have clear, written values. But values are important because they drive people's behavior while they are working on the purpose and the picture of the future.

Most organizations that do have values either have too many values and/or they are not ranked. Research shows that people can't focus on more than three or four values if you really want to impact behavior. Why? Because life is about value conflicts. When these conflicts arise, people need to know what value they should focus on.

Walt Disney intuitively knew this when he ranked safety ahead of courtesy, the show and efficiency among their four values. Why did he do that? Because he knew if a guest left the park on a stretcher, the guest would not have the same smile on their face as was present when entering the park. So if a cast member heard a scream while being courteous to a guest, they would excuse themselves immediately and focus on the number one value - safety.

5. Communication Skills
Communications skills include letter writing, face-to-face talks, telephone, and more. These are day-to-day, moment-by-moment functions that a secretary and administrator do. One cannot do without them.

It's been a tough year for the richest people in the world. Last year there were 1,125 billionaires. This year there are just 793 people rich enough to make our list.

The world has become a wealth wasteland.

Like the rest of us, the richest people in the world have endured a financial disaster over the past year. Today there are 793 people on our list of the World's Billionaires, a 30% decline from a year ago.

Of the 1,125 billionaires who made last year's ranking, 373 fell off the list--355 from declining fortunes and 18 who died. There are 38 newcomers, plus three moguls who returned to the list after regaining their 10-figure fortunes. It is the first time since 2003 that the world has had a net loss in the number of billionaires.

The world's richest are also a lot poorer. Their collective net worth is $2.4 trillion, down $2 trillion from a year ago. Their average net worth fell 23% to $3 billion. The last time the average was that low was in 2003.

Bill Gates lost $18 billion but regained his title as the world's richest man. Warren Buffett, last year's No. 1, saw his fortune decline $25 billion as shares of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK) fell nearly 50% in 12 months, but he still managed to slip just one spot to No. 2. Mexican telecom titan Carlos Slim Helú also lost $25 billion and dropped one spot to No. 3.

It was hard to avoid the carnage, whether you were in stocks, commodities, real estate or technology. Even people running profitable businesses were hammered by frozen credit markets, weak consumer spending or declining currencies.

The biggest loser in the world this year, by dollars, was last year's biggest gainer. India's Anil Ambani lost $32 billion--76% of his fortune--as shares of his Reliance Communications, Reliance Power and Reliance Capital all collapsed.

Ambani is one of 24 Indian billionaires, all but one of whom are poorer than a year ago. Another 29 Indians lost their billionaire status entirely as India's stock market tumbled 44% in the past year and the Indian rupee depreciated 18% against the dollar. It is no longer the top spot in Asia for billionaires, ceding that title to China, which has 28.

Russia became the epicenter of the world's commodities bust, dropping 55 billionaires--two-thirds of its 2008 crop. Among them: Dmitry Pumpyansky, an industrialist from the resource-rich Ural mountain region, who lost $5 billion as shares of his pipe producer, TMK, sank 84%. Also gone is Vasily Anisimov, father of Moscow's Paris Hilton, Anna Anisimova, who lost $3.2 billion as the value of his Metalloinvest Holding, one of Russia's largest ore mining and processing firms, fell along with his real estate holdings.

Twelve months ago Moscow overtook New York as the billionaire capital of the world, with 74 tycoons to New York's 71. Today there are 27 in Moscow and 55 in New York.

After slipping in recent years, the U.S. is regaining its dominance as a repository of wealth. Americans account for 44% of the money and 45% of the list's slots, up seven and three percentage points from last year, respectively. Still, it has 110 fewer billionaires than a year ago.

Those with ties to Wall Street were particularly hard hit. Former head of AIG (AIG) Maurice (Hank) Greenberg saw his $1.9 billion fortune nearly wiped out after the insurance behemoth had to be bailed out by the U.S. government. Today Greenberg is worth less than $100 million. Former Citigroup (C) Chairman Sandy Weill also falls from the ranks.

Last year there were 39 American billionaire hedge fund managers; this year there are 28. Twelve American private equity tycoons dropped out of the billionaire ranks.
Blackstone Group's (BX) Stephen Schwarzman, who lost $4 billion, and Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts' Henry Kravis, who lost $2.5 billion, retain their billionaire status despite their weaker fortunes.

Worldwide, 80 of the 355 drop-offs from last year's list had fortunes derived from finance or investments.

While 656 billionaires lost money in the past year, 44 added to their fortunes. Those who made money did so by catering to budget-conscious consumers (discount retailer Uniqlo's Tadashi Yanai), predicting the crash (investor John Paulson) or cashing out in the nick of time (Cirque du Soleil's Guy Laliberte).

So is there anywhere one can still make a fortune these days? The 38 newcomers offer a few clues. Among the more notable new billionaires are Mexican Joaquín Guzmán Loera, one of the biggest suppliers of cocaine to the U.S.; Wang Chuanfu of China, whose BYD Co. began selling electric cars in December, and American John Paul Dejoria, who got the world clean with his Paul Mitchell shampoos and sloppy with his Patrón Tequila.

Fight for Your Money Tips for Tax Time

I'm a huge believer in having your taxes done professionally, especially if your income exceeds $50,000 a year. In my experience, the savings you realize from a professionally done return will more than cover the cost. In fact, the savings are usually somewhere between five and 10 times your investment. So if you spend $500 having your tax return done, you will more than likely shave $2,500 to $5,000 off your tax bill.

Saving money on tax preparation is just one of the many topics covered in my new book, Fight for Your Money. I stopped by the Today Show this morning to talk about it with Matt Lauer. Here's a sampling of some of the tips we discussed:

Look for a Real Professional: Your best bet for quality tax-preparation help is to use a certified professional. Are they more expensive? Yes. But their experience and ability to spot just one missed deduction or credit can easily save you the difference. Consider hiring an Enrolled Agent. Enrolled Agents (EAs) are federally licesnsed tax specialists, oftentimes former IRS employees. You can find one by going to the National Association of Enrolled Agents or the National Association of Tax Professionals. Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are another good option. Visit the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the National Society of Accountants for referrals.

Look for Protection: Before you hire a tax preparer, find out what (if any) protection you wil have in the event they make a mistake. The big chains typically promise to cover any fines, penalties, and interest you might get hit with as a result of their work. Many CPAs and EAs will do the same. But this is not something you can just assume. So make a point of asking about it in advance. And if they tell you that nothing is guaranteed, take your business elsewhere.

Ask About Outsourcing: Some accounting firms outsource their tax prep work to chains. Others send returns overseas, where they can be processed overnight for as little as $50. Either way, you're being ripped off - and subjected to the dangers of identity theft. Think of all the data in your tax return - name, social security number, date of birth, bank and brokerage account numbers. To an identity thief, getting all this data in one package would be like hitting the jackpot! So you must find out how your personal information is being protected.

A common question asked by most companies is, "How do we continuously stay ahead of the competition? How do we become a truly innovative company capable of creating repeatable breakthrough strategic moves?" This is a particularly vexing problem during the current economic downturn.

All companies have to cut costs, yet unfortunately, one of the early victims is often spending on innovation activities such as R&D, training, or education budgets. Long-term projects are shelved, hiring is frozen, and workers are made redundant. Worse, risk capital begins to disappear.

Yet, counterintuitively, innovation goes up when the economy goes down. Despite the pain, recessions are historically times of enormous creativity and breakthrough business launches.  
 
In an interview with co-founder and co-author of the Blue Ocean Strategy, Professor W. Chan Kim shares his views with writer Narelle Hooper on these questions...

What colour ocean are you swimming in: red or blue? It's a metaphor that has powerfully captured an approach to business strategy - one which shuns the
well-trodden path.

In 2005, INSEAD professors W.Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne channelled their 15 years of research into their book Blue Ocean Strategy. Since then the French business school academics have created a sizeable wave of their own.Despite the sniping about its shortcomings from some traditional strategists, the book continues to appear at the top of the business bestsellers list and South Korean born, US-raised Kim regularly sells out on the speaking circuit.

Red oceans, according to their analogy, represent industries today - the known market space in which boundaries are defined and companies compete to grab a greater share of existing demand. As the space gets more and more crowded, prospects for profits and growth are reduced and competition turns the water bloody.

Blue oceans denote the undiscovered market space in which demand is created rather than fought over and there is plenty of opportunity for profitable growth.

Typically, companies in the red ocean pursue incremental improvements through either low cost or differentiation. It is the "strategic move" that allows a company to create a blue ocean and "value innovation" is achieved through the simultaneous pursuit of differentiation and low cost.

Speaking to AFR BOSS from Paris ahead of a visit to Australia in March, Kim says there is lots of "red" behaviour going on now. "Many companies are in a knee-jerk reaction. It's 'we can't do anything about this. Demand is collapsing.' 
 
They think the only way they can survive is to shrink costs and cut jobs. The assumption behind this is that shrinking demand cannot be controlled....We are saying you can do something about it."

Instead of assuming structure shapes strategy, emerging thinking is that strategy can shape business structure. "People take for granted what strategy is - either we are differentiated or we are the lowest cost," Kim says. "The main thinking of Blue Ocean Strategy is it's not good enough, you need to simultaneously achieve differentiation and low cost."

He says the root of the current crisis lies in a boom built on "financial innovations" that transferred risk instead of solid and profitable growth of the real economy. "Innovation ruined the financial sector this time - where was the fundamental value added?"

When innovation were not based on value, and decoupled from efforts to pursue breakthroughs in buyer value, they cannot produce or sustain profitable growth and may lead to the kind of economic backlash unfurling today. Mostly, says Kim,a blue ocean is created from within the red, when a company comes up with a move that alters the boundaries of an existing industry. The shift by McDonald's to healthier foods, the success of the Ipod and Itunes are good examples.

He says it is important not to confuse innovation with the Blue Ocean strategy. And you need to be nimble when the competition hits your patch, to find new uncontested space.

Critics argue there are shortcomings in the depth of case study data to support Blue Ocean theory. But Kim says he is continuing to gather long-term empirical data. And in what sounds like the germ of another book, he says it is an approach that can be embraced not just corporates but by governments and individuals.

Day 2: "Teaching in the Brain New World" by Henry Toi

I. Design of Teaching Periods
Discoveries in the field of learning and recall can help teachers in designing lesson plans that are brain-based. Follow-up revision can also be enhanced with the understanding of how the brain retains information over a period of time.

II. Making Thinking Visible
One of the most powerful ways to teach is to transfer thinking processes to students. The problem lies with the nature of thinking processes, which is "invisible" most of the time. Hence, students may see the demonstration of the desired outcome, but are unable to replicate the processes. Mind Maps can be used to make the instructor's thinking processes visible to the students and help scaffold student's thinking.

III. Creative Thinking
Creative thinking process requires skillful controlled divergent and convergent thinking. The templates developed in this session can be applied to a wide range of subjects and topics.

IV. Critical Thinking
